Terms of Service

The agreement between you and Heir

Last updated 2026-10-01

Welcome to Heir. By creating an account, you agree to these terms. They're written to be read, so please do.

What Heir is

Heir is a personal finance planning tool. It helps you organize your accounts, budget, goals, debts, giving and taxes. Heir is not a bank, a financial advisor, an accountant or a tax preparer.

Everything Heir shows you, including tax estimates, projections and examples, is for planning only. It is not financial, tax or legal advice. Before making important decisions or filing your taxes, check with a qualified professional.

Your account

You need to be at least 18 to create an account. Keep your password private; you're responsible for what happens under your account. Please use a real email address, so we can reach you about your account and payments.

Membership and payments

Heir starts with a 14-day free trial; nothing is charged during the trial. When it ends, you're charged a one-time membership fee of $99 (in Canadian dollars in Canada, US dollars elsewhere). After that, it's $1 a month to keep your account active. Payments are processed by Stripe. Taxes may apply where required.

30-day money-back

If Heir isn't right for you, write to hello@heir-hq.com within 30 days of paying the $99 membership fee and we'll refund it in full. A refund ends your paid membership.

Asking your bank to reverse a charge (a chargeback) instead of asking us is treated the same way as a refund.

Cancelling

You can cancel anytime from Settings. If you cancel during the trial, you pay nothing. If you cancel later, your membership stays active until the end of the period you've paid for, then your account becomes read-only: you can still sign in, see and export everything, but not make changes. Coming back costs $1 a month if you've already paid the membership fee.

If a payment fails

We'll let you know and retry for about two weeks. If payment still doesn't go through, your account becomes read-only, as above.

Your offline copy of Heir

Members who have paid the $99 membership fee can download an offline copy of Heir from Settings, starting 30 days after paying. Each copy is made for one person: it holds your data and receipts, and carries your name and a unique license ID, sealed with Heir's signature.

We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use your copy for your own or your household's finances, on your own devices, for as long as you like, including after you cancel.

You may not share, sell, rent, publish or host your copy or the Heir app inside it, use it to offer a service to others, or remove its notices or your name. Heir keeps all rights in the app. If these terms are broken, or the membership fee is refunded or disputed, this licence ends and we may close the account.

The offline copy is provided as is. It never updates: tax figures and limits stay as they were on the day you downloaded it. Its data lives only in the browser on that computer, so keep regular backups. You can download up to 3 copies in any 30 days.

Your data

Your financial information belongs to you. We store it securely, we never sell it, and we share it only with the services that run Heir, as described in our privacy policy. You can download a copy or delete your account at any time. Deleting your account stops billing and permanently erases your data. Offline copies you've downloaded are on your own computer, so deleting them is up to you.

Giving and receipts

Heir helps you organize your giving records and documents. The records in Heir are not official tax receipts; those come from the organizations you give to.

Fair use

Please use Heir only for your own personal or household finances, and don't try to break, overload, copy or access parts of Heir that aren't yours.

If Heir closes

If we ever have to close Heir, we'll tell members ahead of time by email and open the offline copy to every member, so you can keep Heir and your data on your own computer. We won't delete your data before you've had the chance to download it.

Changes and limits

We may improve Heir and update these terms. If we make an important change, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. The price of your membership won't go up without notice.

We work hard to keep Heir accurate and available, but we can't promise it will always be error-free or uninterrupted. To the extent the law allows, Heir isn't responsible for decisions you make based on its estimates. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law.
